Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Vivian. I am currently a medical student in the University of British Columbia (UBC) M.D. program. Previously, I earned a Master's of Applied Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering from UBC, and a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Biomedical Sciences specialization) from McMaster University. I have extensive undergraduate and graduate-level education in biology, biochemistry, and medicine. I also have extensive knowledge of applying to competitive Canadian programs, as I am a graduate of the McMaster Health Sci program and a current med student. Outside of school, I enjoy exploring the outdoors in British Columbia through hiking, rock climbing, skiing, and trail running all year round. I love teaching and mentoring and it has been a core part of my identity throughout my high school and university days and I'm looking forward to tutoring you!
Tutoring Experience:
During my undergraduate studies, I tutored high school science subjects for 3 years. In my master's degree, I was a teaching assistant for 4 undergraduate biomedical engineering courses. I am looking to continue my love for teaching during my medical school training. I have also been involved with a variety of mentorship programs because it is my passion. I ran high school-level conferences to inspire a love for stem cell research, I volunteered for an indigenous students' summer science program, and I have mentored many high school and undergraduate students applying for medical school.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to always meet the student where they are at. I am a naturally curious and caring person, and I always make sure to understand the student's needs and goals in order to tailor my teaching. From there, I like to ask questions to see wheat the student understands and where they are confused, and gently provide direction. I am an enthusiastic teacher, and I like to celebrate and congratulate successes to provide encouragement and make it a positive learning environment.
