Personal Description:
My name is Vanessa. I am a 4th-year bachelor’s student at the University of Toronto pursuing Economics (with a concentration on Data Analytics) and Public Policy. I am a recipient of the university’s most prestigious merit scholarship, I have consistently been on the dean’s list based on having an outstanding GPA and I am set to graduate with high distinction in 2023. I love learning and have a particular interest in coding, new technologies, and public economics. I love working with other people, and I am able to relate well to people of all ages.
I completed the rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) program in high school, studying Maths, English, Geography, and Biology at Higher Level (HL); Chemistry and French at Standard Level. I completed the program with a score of 43/45. I primarily offer Mathematics and Economics tutoring but can also offer sessions Biology, English, and Geography sessions on request.
On request, I also offer university admission and essay guidance. I received undergraduate offers from top-tier institutions in Canada, the US, and the UK, and can therefore advise on these.
Tutoring Experience:
I have 2+ years of experience in tutoring students of a diverse age group (ages 8 - 36) and unique learning needs. I have helped my students to become more confident when approaching challenging concepts and become excited to learn. Some of the successes that my students have had include: scoring A’s in their school’s and provincial-level examinations, getting admission to higher-level institutions of their choice, and comfortably rejoining formal education after 2 decades.
Tutoring Approach:
The success of my students is a top priority to me. My gratification stems from seeing my students become more confident in their approach to the concepts being learned. This means that I constantly look for ways to adjust and make every tutoring experience personalized. I strive to really understand my students’ goals before I begin the journey with them and curate a thorough plan that would best suit them. I try to access the best resources, as well as incorporate the resources, e.g. textbooks and class notes, that my students already have. The first session will be a virtual consultation, after which I will create a syllabus for them.
I challenge my students and our sessions will primarily be active learning (i.e. tackling questions). I assign some homework to my students and encourage them to bring questions to the next sessions. I start every session by answering their questions. I am also available to answer questions via text when not in session.
I really value receiving honest feedback from my students. Every 2 weeks - 1 month, I seek feedback on their progress and on the tutoring sessions. If there are any concerns, I involve them in the process of adjusting the structure of the class, and the concentration of the content covered.
