Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Shelby and I'm a graduate from the University of Victoria. I studied Psychology and Biology in university, and I've taken a wide variety of course topics at a College in Portland as well prior. My interests include writing, photography, and learning about and taking care of animals. I also love travelling a lot, and have lived in 3 different countries! I love meeting new people and learning new things, and I find teaching to be incredibly rewarding. I have been tutoring in formal and informal settings in different capacities for about 10 years. I look forward to learning more about you and your goals, and hope you will choose me to help you achieve them!
Tutoring Experience:
I have taken college courses on teaching Elementary Math, and have tutored on a professional level for around 3 years, with two different companies. I first was hired by the Beaverton School District to be a tutor for their AVID program. AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, and is a special program that's been implemented in Beaverton Schools designed to not only tutor students on all their school subjects, but also help them organize and manage their coursework in a useful and efficient way that promotes the student's individual success. I also was hired by a private agency, College Nannies, Sitters, and Tutors as a personal tutor that families could hire through the company to tutor their children on a wide variety of school subjects.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe a great way to learn things is to break it down into pieces, and tackle one idea or method at a time. Big picture is important as well, but sometimes starting with that can be overwhelming! I am happy to guide you through your schoolwork, or whatever you are hoping to learn and achieve. It is easier for me to know where to start if you have more specific goals, but don't worry, I can help you determine what your goals are as well. I believe patience and kindness are the most important precursors to teaching, without that learning quickly becomes a very unpleasant experience. I can tailor the speed of teaching and content to each individual, based on their needs and preferences. My job is not to scold or shame you for a wrong answer, but rather to guide you to a right one. If you have any questions for me, please reach out; I'll be happy to answer them!
