Personal Description:
My name is Sheema. I have taught STEM classes to high school & university students for about 7 years. I graduated with a Bachelor’s from McGill University, I have 2 Master’s degrees, and I am an Ontario certified teacher for science-biology and math for Grades 7-12.
At the university level, I've taught the following courses: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medical Terminology, Physiology, and Math to incoming freshmen university students for a period of 5 years. I've taught or tutored math and science subjects from Grades 7-12 in Ontario for a year and a half, and, most recently, I helped create e-learning materials for Advanced Placement Calculus.
I am enthusiastic about helping students succeed. I want my students to feel that learning math or science subjects online can be fun and enjoyable. When I am not working, I love learning languages, skydiving, and watching French TV!
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching STEM subjects for about 7 years to high school & university students. I taught the following credited courses at the university level: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medical Terminology, Physiology, and Math for 5 years to incoming freshmen students.
I have also tutored Math and Science from Grades 7-12 in the Cornwall area for about a year and a half. Earlier this year, I co-taught a Grade 9 Science class at a local high school in Cornwall, and, most recently created e-learning materials for Advanced Placement Calculus.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to online tutoring is simple. It is highly interactive. I use a VOIP (Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Team, or Google Meet with screen share which includes a virtual white board. In addition, if I share my screen, the student can also share his or her screen with me so that when I send questions in PDF or word to him/her, I can see that he/she did them. And the student can do the questions and ask in live time.
In the first lesson, I get to know the student, help with and address any anxieties he/she might have, and start tutoring. We go through what was taught in the student's class and I determine any areas that may be challenging.
I give the students extra work to do and help him/her with any homework questions. In addition, I create online flashcards and extra practice handouts for him/her to do on their own to allow for some really great independent learning that can be fun and enjoyable. All of which is accessed through Quizlet (a fun learning app for mathematics and the sciences). We review everything we did in the previous lesson, so that the student doesn't forget anything.
If I find that the student is working at a steady rate, we will even move ahead to other topics in the course. So if the student wants to go beyond the textbook, we can do that. It is always imperative that questions are asked. The more questions asked the more a student learns.
Furthermore, I find a collaboration of good study habits allows the student to do better in class. So, I like to listen to students' needs and allow them to guide the tutoring sessions from time to time depending on their age. I hope to hear from you, so that we can begin this learning adventure together!
