Personal Description:
I'm Sean. I love Latin and Ancient Greek, and I enjoy building up that passion and enthusiasm with others. I've been studying the Classical languages for six years, and I have a BA (2015) and MA (2018) in Classics from McMaster University, as well as significant teaching, tutoring and customer service experience--so I know all about helping others!
Tutoring Experience:
2016-2017: Led two tutorial sections in first-year Roman history courses at McMaster.
2017-2018: Functioned as Assistant Tutor for students taking McMaster University's Medical Terminology course, offering one-on-one guidance to students with the Latin portion of the course. All students who took up this service rapidly improved their comprehension of the Latin elements of medical terminology.
2015-2016: Engaged in a self-run and successful essay-editing and consultation business.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning Latin and Greek should be a cooperative endeavour between student and tutor undertaken with cheerfulness and humility. I emphasize confidence in the basics of the language (conjugations and declensions) with an eye towards developing genuine reading comprehension and proficiency. Too many Latin and Greek students are unable to get through even 25% of an ancient author without pausing to look up every word, even after four-years of study at a higher level. By the time we are finished, you will have developed a strong foundation in your chosen language as well as the instincts necessary to engage confidently with an ancient author--without having to wear out your dictionary.
