Personal Description:
I’m Sarah, I have Bachelors Degree in Child and Youth Care, I love to spend time outside and make art. In school my biggest struggle was focus/attention and organization so I have a very personal understanding of studying frustration.
Tutoring Experience:
I have worked as a school counsellor and educational assistant most recently, so the majority of my job is getting know the individual student and their academic strengths and challenges. Then I can assess where any learning gaps or misunderstandings are and work with students to figure out what we’re missing. I have used these skills for years in after school programs, with friends and classmates, as well as most recently professionally in classrooms.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is to establish a comfortable relationship, create a safe space to make mistakes and learn from them, assess where learning gaps or misunderstandings are and come alongside students to learn together, ask clarifying questions and intervene when needed, give examples without giving away answers, and ensure that I give encouragement and praise when possible in order to help the student build on their own existing strengths.
As I really struggled to stay on task to complete work and even to get started on assignments in school I recognize that sometimes the most important help that can be offered is the moral support of someone on your side while you get through the hardest part. It’s easy to get discouraged when you get to a roadblock so it’s so important to have someone on your team that has your back.
I am also always aware of learning disabilities/cognitive abilities and encourage students to advocate for accommodations when necessary. I can also adapt my style to for the needs of neurodivergent students.
