Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Sam and most individuals would describe me as very friendly, patient and understanding – Characteristics that I believe to be incredibly important for an effective teacher. I’ve completed seven years of university where I received my Master of Science studying Molecular and Cellular Biology, and previous to that I received my Honours Bachelor of Science with a Major in Molecular Biology and Genetics with a Minor in Biochemistry. For the past five years I have been working at a biotech company developing pharmaceuticals and cosmetics using natural cannabis derivatives and characterizing them with some of the top institutions around the world. Here I hold the position of Vice President of Scientific Affairs and have travelled the world giving conference presentations in the scientific community. I feel that with my knowledge and interpersonal skills I will be able to help students in a fun and meaningful way and look forward to meeting new students to help in any way that I can!
Tutoring Experience:
I have roughly 10 years of teaching experience at various levels. For the duration of my Graduate Studies, I served as a Teaching Assistant where I taught class sizes of over 50 Undergraduate (university) students. The classes were often laboratory components of the students’ courses, specifically in Human Genetics and Microbiology, where it would be my responsibility to teach concepts, facilitate proper lab techniques, oversee experiments, answer questions, and grade assignments, lab reports, and exams. In university I also served as a private tutor in courses including Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Genetics, and Math to name a few. Previous to this I had served many years as a volunteer for a company called ‘Let’s Talk Science’ wherein I’d enter the classrooms of students from grade kindergarten to 12, where I’d teach interactive concepts pertaining to their curriculum. Needless to say, the teaching styles required to engage a toddler versus a university student are quite vast and so I feel confident that with my experience I am able to cover all the bases.
Tutoring Approach:
Having spent the majority of my life in academia, I have experienced all different approaches to education both personally (as someone who has been tutored), and through my experience as a teacher. With this, I have developed the ability to identify trends in individuals in order to better understand their own learning styles to better cater my teaching techniques and accommodate the individual. In order to truly learn a concept there are a number of steps that must be taken in order to achieve a deep understanding of a subject rather than simple memorization, and with these steps I will be able to provide the necessary tools to ensure my students are satisfied with the progress that we will build together.
