Personal Description:
I'm a PhD Student in Cell Biology at McGill University, with an Honours BSc. in Cell & Developmental Biology from UBC. At this point I've learnt everything biology - including microbiology, organelle biology, intercellular trafficking, biological statistics and neuroscience. I'm a big fan of science communication, which means I have experience in translating difficult scientific topics into things regular folks understand! I also have experience with grant writing, poster and paper presentations, and thesis writing.
Tutoring Experience:
Chapter science tutor (100-200 level) for my sorority, on biology, chemistry, and physics.
Peer mentor for 300-level yeast organismal biology, with a class size of 50 students.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe it's important to start broad, since science is so interconnected. Oftentimes, when there's a concept you don't understand, it's because there's a foundational piece of knowledge that's missing. By having a really good grasp of the foundations, you're better equipped to 'rationalize' your way into the harder concepts! I often use comparisons to real-life objects and situations to explain theoretical or molecular concepts so that the scientific components make more sense, and I'm a big believer that when in doubt, a drawing is worth a thousand words.
