Information About Rory
Halifax tutorPersonal Description:
Hello!
My name is Rory, and I have a BA in International Relations and am currently studying Law. I was born and raised in Halifax but now live in the UK (when there isn't an ongoing pandemic). I have extensive experience with research and essay writing and love helping students to explore the topics that interest them. I have also debated competitively for over 10 years, representing Canada three times at the World Championships.
Beyond my academic interests, I am an avid baker and love to play music. I also love to start new DIY projects and play squash recreationally.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over five years of experience in teaching debating to groups of students aged 8-18. This includes working with students who speak English as a second language. This teaching involved helping students to learn language, analysis, and presentation skills, as well as how to develop a deep and varied knowledge of current events and political issues.
Over the past year, I have also been part of a program at my law school where students go to secondary schools to teach children about some of the laws surrounding social media, the internet, and cyberbullying.
Tutoring Approach:
While it may sound cliché, it is true that every student learns differently. Therefore, as a tutor, it is important to me that I develop my teaching in collaboration with the student and their parents to make sure that the best outcomes possible are achieved.
I like to use a variety of teaching tools to keep lessons interesting - videos, presentations, and interactive activities included.
