Information About Robert
Mount Royal tutorPersonal Description:
I am a graduate of the University of Ottawa with an M.A. in Political Science, as well as a B.A in Social Sciences with specialization in Political Science and Minor in Law. I have extensive experience in political theory and am familiar with diverse subject matter in politics, political economy, media and communication studies, social and cultural studies, and law. I have published my research in multiple academic journals and plan on starting a PhD in Communication in 2021. I am also actively engaged in research projects with multiple university professors. I have achieved outstanding academic success thus far, and I wish to draw on this in order to help inspire others to pursue their educational goals.
Tutoring Experience:
I have worked as a Teaching Assistant for two university courses (on Women and Politics and Applied Political Ethics), one of which was offered online due to Covid-19 measures (giving me valuable experience with distance learning formats and best practices). These experiences involved presenting class materials, marking and giving feedback on assignments, holding discussion groups, and handling communications with students in an understanding and professional manner.
I have also worked for two years at the University of Ottawa's Academic Writing Help Centre, where I tutored students from across the university and at all levels of study to learn and improve academic research and writing skills, with a focus on providing the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary for students to succeed on their own - rather than simply editing or proof-reading their work.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching philosophy is student-centered, meaning that the goal is not simply to ensure that materials are learned/memorized, but that the students themselves have an enjoyable experience while learning, which is key to the development of one's goals and understanding of what they want to achieve with their education. I encourage, above all, the exploration of new ideas and paths, new critiques and perspectives. While learning mandatory materials has its place and importance, the real driver of happiness and success is the cultivation of creativity and inspiration in learning. A student who can remember their materials for an exam may do well, but a student who is inspired and self-motivated by their materials and the promise of a fulfilling education/career is set to transcend all expectations and bring real change to our societies, our cultures, and our world.
