Personal Description:
I am currently pursuing my honours degree in philosophy with a focus on ethics with a minor in law. My future career goals are to teach at a secondary school level. I have always been one to help out peers that I see struggling since I enjoy and believe in education. Since high school, I have enjoyed and shown great competency in reading and writing. I take my studies seriously in order to maintain a grading average of over 90% but also understand that learning should not be a stressful endeavour. As much as I focus on my education, I also make time for myself to do the things I enjoy, which makes me a better student in the long run.
Tutoring Experience:
This would be my first time tutoring professionally but I believe I have relevant experience. While I was still attending high school, I would spend time helping out in the classroom designated for children with autism spectrum disorders. This experience taught me a lot about patience and about teaching because I had to help guide students who were learning things that I had never thought had to be taught before. I also worked for one year as an inbound call center insurance agent. At this position, I would teach clients every day about their policies, specific coverages, and even how the insurance industry works in general. I had to learn to diversify my approaches since some people learned by doing equations together, others learned better when I wrote out all the information for them. Lastly, I have always been more than happy to help my peers out when they are struggling and while they were not paying me to help them, I would always try my best to leave them only once they were comfortable with the material that they were struggling with before.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring will be different with each student. At first, I want them to talk to me and get a sense of how they are feeling. For example, if there are feelings of resentment toward the material then we need to address those first before trying to learn it again. I always want my student to feel confident and capable, even if it takes a little convincing. I will strive to be patient and flexible with every student. If my first approach did not work, then we will try another one based on the response. Most importantly, I will always treat my students as equals. I may know more about a certain subject than they do, but I will always have more to learn and I am sure that they have lots to teach me. I am capable of being stern when a student needs to know that they are not focused, but I do so empathetically so that there is always a balance of reaching the objective curriculum goals and encouraging the student's academic confidence.
