Information About Rachel
Nanaimo tutorPersonal Description:
Hello! Thank you so much for your interest in studying with me. I have always had a passion for learning and for passing on my knowledge (My younger siblings, being the perfect guinea pigs, still groan at the sight of chalk in my hands). Now more than ever before, given the current global health crisis, it is crucial to engage the minds of the young and to get them interested in the world around them! Children are the future, and the importance of their education cannot be overstated.
My educational background has provided me with a rich base of knowledge in the sciences (particularly biology) and language arts. I graduated from McGill University in 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Cognitive Science. Since then, I have had the honour of scoring in the top 3% on the Medical College Admission Test and teaching at my local university. For the last two years, I have enjoyed tutoring students in Biology, Chemistry, Math, and English.
Working with children is also a passion of mine. I have over 6 years of teaching/coaching experience with children and young adults ranging in age from 3 to 18. I also volunteer with a children's camp every summer, which has further enriched my understanding of and respect for children.
I am so excited to meet you and start learning together!
Tutoring Experience:
My teaching experience is as follows:
• 2019-present: ESL Teacher at VIPKID
• 2019: Biology teacher at Vancouver Island University
• 2018-2019: Independent Tutor (Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Calculus 12, Math 9, English, etc.)
• 2014-2015: Behavioural Interventionist (English)
• 2013: Teacher's Assistant (French)
I have also been a high school sports coach for three years.
Tutoring Approach:
Please note that I teach online via Skype call! Given the physical distance between myself and my clients, I always prioritise the creation of a warm, safe learning environment. Personal experience has convinced me that students learn best when they are offered respect and treated as equally important, intelligent beings. Therefore, I do not believe in overly formal attitudes towards teaching. Rather than lectures, I initiate and guide conversations. I like to use analogies and real-world examples to enrich the learning process and make impersonal subjects more tangible. When it comes to more abstract subjects like math, visual aides are very important to my teaching style, and I am able to share my screen to illustrate topics as we discuss them.
