Personal Description:
I have a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Communications. I have always enjoyed reading and writing and have written articles for some newspapers and magazines. My daily job involves coordinating the online communications (including writing and editing) for an organization that publishes two magazines.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring for 2 years, including helping clients with English reading, writing, and grammar, editing essays and reports. My clients have ranged from elementary school-aged students to high school students to an adult wanting to practice conversational English.
Although I have never been employed as a teacher, I was a peer tutor in high school for a Grade 9 math class, and I also had a high school co-op placement in a Grade 3 class. In university, I was a teaching assistant for two semesters in a first-year university English class. I have been a group leader and teacher at church Vacation Bible School programs and Sunday School classes, and I now volunteer for my church's Sunday kids' program twice a month, which includes leading the children through activities and memory work.
Tutoring Approach:
I take into account everyone's individual personalities and needs. I try to get to know the student first to determine the areas they most need to improve and their learning style. The more time I spend with someone, the more I can learn about their weaknesses and strengths in English reading, writing, grammar, or comprehension. I want people to have fun as they learn, and I think learning about someone's interests and passions helps achieve that.
