Information About Peter
Ottawa tutorPersonal Description:
Hey there, I'm Peter. I am an understanding and engaging tutor with a Master’s in Financial Economics and a strong background in high school math, university-level economics, and statistics.
What I believe sets me apart is helping students truly grasp complex problems using engrossing examples and collaborating with them to help them build confidence. I adjust my style to what you prefer and try to present it in the form that you resonate with, so you just don't survive but thrive.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been a tutor on and off for over 10 years. Over the years, I’ve helped students from all walks of life—from those just trying to pass a class to those aiming for top scores on various exams, and even professionals looking to upgrade their Excel skills. My particular strengths include middle and high school Algebra, Calculus, SCT/ACT Math, etc… as well as high school and university level Economics and Statistics. I also have a background in economic and financial modelling, so if you are a university student or adult wanting to learn Excel, VBA, etc, I can be of use, even if it is just learning how to clean your dataset or make a macro.
Tutoring Approach:
As a tutor, my focus is on helping a student meet and exceed their objectives, whether it's a struggling student know enough to pass the class, or helping a good student excel on a university entrance exam. My focus is using real world examples and how to concept connects to the wider world, whether using ticket sales to learn algebra or real estate markets to learn supply and demand. I work best by being collaborative and interactive, regularly making sure students understand their process and "teach back" to reinforce learning and help them be more confident.
Depending on the lesson, I generally do a quick review of the previous material, breakdown the concept using terms and examples that resonate with the student, do some practice questions, then do a check-in or even a mini-quiz where the student shows their understanding and "teaches back" and finally ending in a recap of what to work on next and/or what they would do best in working on at home.
My specialty in teaching is getting students from here to there, from high school students prepare for exams or university, helping university students get a grasp on intro and intermediate economics or statistics, and even helping adults upgrade their skills in Excel and data analysis. What distinguishes a lesson from me is using engaging real life applications to bring abstract concepts to life and my drive to see students learn and grow.
