Personal Description:
I am a current Master's student at the University of Toronto and I have a passion for teaching. I have a background in Art History but love History and English - I am always reading! I have tutored throughout high school and university and love helping students of all ages understand new concepts.
Tutoring Experience:
While in my undergrad, I was a peer tutor to first year students in my program. I worked with professors to develop curriculum for the first year class and would hold weekly review sessions for the students. I helped them understand complex ideas in their readings as well as assisting them with projects and assignments.
In Grade 12, I was a teaching assistant for Grade 10 AP History and English. I helped the lead teacher with lesson planning, taught lessons weekly, assisted students with homework and study guides and took students on field trips. This experience allowed me to understand teaching in an advanced classroom setting and learn the best ways to help students navigate high academic standards.
I was a peer tutor throughout high school, focusing on English and History. I helped students from all grades understand the required material and build skills in essay writing and study habits.
Beyond academics, I have worked in museums, galleries and other cultural institutions as a tour guide and interpreter. I enjoy sharing my passion for the exhibitions with every group that comes in. I am able to tailor my talks to the needs of each group so that each person can understand the information I am giving and have an rewarding experience.
I also spent four years coaching fencing and archery. As a coach, I worked with people of all ages, including children, teenagers and young adults. Each group required different approaches and I was able to successfully teach a variety of skills and concepts. Coaching allowed me to interact with diverse groups of people and it made me happy to see my students improve at their practice.
Tutoring Approach:
Teaching and education are important to me and it brings me great satisfaction to see my students succeed and enjoy the learning process. I want students to enjoy learning. Learning can be difficult if you do not understand the information and that can make it a frustrating and uncomfortable process. Learning should be engaging and rewarding. I am here to help students use their skills and tools to understand different subjects and materials and become confident in their learning. I want to motivate my students to achieve their personal goals and gain an appreciation for the learning process.
I encourage critical thinking and analysis to ensure that students have a concrete understanding of the material. Each student learns differently and I am able to adapt my teaching to suit their needs. Whatever the process is, I want my students to be independent and own their skills and knowledge. I am dedicated to supporting and mentoring through tutoring but want each student to be an independent learner.
