Personal Description:

One of my greatest interests is reading, and I love inspiring others to love reading as well. I believe everyone has room to learn and grow, and with the correct tools and interventions, everyone can learn to read and write.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored on and off since I was a high school student. Starting in my B.Ed. degree, I started working with students with Learning Disabilities, both as a tutor, and in the classroom. I have been teaching at Foothills Academy for the past four years. This is a private school exclusively for students with Learning Disabilities. In this time I have learned extensively about research based best practices to teach reading and writing. I am always learning more about the science of reading to ensure my pupils receive the best and most effective instruction. I have worked with students who don't know their letter names by grade 3, and students who are reading several grade levels ahead for their age. I have extensive experience working with students who have ADHD and on the ASD spectrum.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my tutoring to student needs. I spend time getting to know what the student already knows, and where they have room for growth. As much as possible, I include their interests in my instruction. For example, for a student with an interest in Pokemon, I used Pokemon cards to teach phonics rules. I have access to extensive resources to cater to student needs and interests, and I enjoy connecting with a student over their passions. I give honest and frequent feedback, and can always find something positive in effort and achievement. I am open to providing additional reading or spelling practice to families who are interested.
