Information About Mirabel
Kitchener tutorPersonal Description:
Hi! I am currently a student at the University of Ottawa in the Biomedical Sciences program. I have always been an honour student and graduated with the highest marks in my high school with various awards, including chemistry, teacher's award, biology, and calculus. I love tutoring and working with students of all ages. I am very patient and can help with students of all skill levels.
Tutoring Experience:
I have privately tutored in math, biology, chemistry, physics, and general science for 6 years. I have also tutored ages 6-18 at Kumon for English and Math.
Tutoring Approach:
Through my many years of tutoring I have learned that each individual has a unique learning style and certain teaching techniques to which they respond well. Unfortunately, the schooling system in place today follows a one-size-fits-all model, giving some students advantage over others with more abstract learning styles. It is very easy to fall behind, causing subsequent years to be increasingly difficult. This fosters low self-esteem in students which in my opinion is a major cause of failure to succeed. I am a strong believer in positive reinforcement, encouragement, and building self-confidence, as this can increase success in all areas of life, not just academic success. Most of the students that I tutor express frustration and confusion over their current curriculum. In 99% of the cases, I find that the issue is further back that most students and parents think. If a student is not understanding a certain concept in their grade level, it is usually a case of a lack of development of a basic skill taught in a much earlier year. This is why I always begin with a test of basic knowledge in the field I am tutoring to identify the areas the student is not confident in. Once this skill is retaught in a way that the student can finally grasp, they can finally tackle more complex problems. The longer a student goes without mastering basic skills in a subject, the harder the course work will seem year after year, as chances of success decrease. I teach every student in a variety of styles, including passage reading, diagrams, and visual aids to quickly determine their individual learning style, so I can better cater to them. I am a huge proponent of the Socratic method (asking the student questions) as this was what helped me with my personal academic achievements. My goal, for any course, for any age student, is that by the end of our sessions, the student should be so well-versed in their subject that they would be able to teach it to others.
