Personal Description:
I'm a freelance translator with a passion for linguistics and language learning. I love talking about language learning, philosophy and more! I'm also a big music enthusiast (played a lot when I was younger), and have recently been exploring lots of Japanese artists.
Tutoring Experience:
Several years of ESL teaching experience and over a year of experience tutoring JSL.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe the appropriate methods for language study vary widely depending on the student and their goals. I, for example, spent years doing an immersive study of Japanese, consuming only Japanese content (music, **Contact Detail Removed**vision, etc.) and conducting lots of research on texts. This can work great for someone who enjoys open-ended study and whose language goal is native-level comprehension.
However, let's say someone prefers learning in a more structured environment and their goals with a language are simply to hold a conversation or perhaps navigate a professional setting. I'd recommend that this student uses a textbook or materials that they are comfortable with (it's important that the learning process is enjoyable) and which are selected with their language goals in mind.
So for me, getting to know the student and what they'd like to get out of their language study is the first priority in tutoring.
