Personal Description:
I am a young professional working in government healthcare as a liaison to vulnerable populations. I grew up in foster care, attending several different schools as a child. Because of this experience, I know how important it is to have a consistent adult figure who can look past the struggles of a student and find a way to support them. I know without people in my life who stood by my side and believed in my abilities regardless of my outward behavior, I wouldn't have achieved what I have today.
Education and the ability to engage changed my prospects in life, and I hope to be able to give others the same chance. Understanding, compassion, and leading by example are my main methods of establishing quality learning techniques for my students.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring students with different learning styles (otherwise known as learning disabilities) since I was very young. I was the primary caregiver and teacher for my younger sibling since before I can remember which gave me a special interest in learning how to best teach those who need flexibility.
In college, I taught English as a second language in Seoul, South Korea to university level and high school students.
Additionally, in University I became a teaching assistant for 2000-4000 level Sociology classes including theory teaching and essay writing. I helped students after class catch up or prepare for exams and even taught some classes while the professor was away. My favorite subjects to teach are Political Sociology and History.
Tutoring Approach:
I enjoy learning about my students' strengths and areas to improve and tailoring my tutoring style to fit them. More often than not, I find that engaging students in story telling is often highly successful while I am able to break down complex theories in to relatable stories.
With my students who have different learning styles (formally referred to as learning disabilities) I prefer listening to speaking. Students often engage at different levels regardless of their abilities/ disabilities and no one learns the same as another. I find that students who are 'hard to teach' or 'struggling with a subject' often just aren't given the opportunity to engage in learning in their own style. I enjoy going through this process with my students and learning what works for them!
My favorite way to tutor is teaching others how to learn with study plans and finding the best way each individual learns best.
