Personal Description:
I consider myself a "people person" because I am approachable and find human interaction easy once I can find a topic of common interest. Tutoring comes easy to me because I enjoy helping others. I believe that every experience I go through is to help me guide others when they are in a similar situation. Tutoring helps me achieve that.
I have a bachelor’s degree in accounting and am currently studying for a postgraduate degree in Financial Management. I have always had a flair for teaching as a young child. My first teaching simulation was with my toys. Also, as a first child of three, I grew up teaching my siblings how to do certain things around the house as my parents had shown/taught me. In university, I tutored students during the weekends on courses I had done in previous years. After graduation, some of these students whom I had tutored still reached out to me on several occasions for tutoring sessions (most of which were held virtually).
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring for several years now, mainly in subjects like mathematics, English, accounting, and economics. I have first-hand experience with students in university as I was a tutor for three years while studying for my bachelor's degree.
In the second year of my undergraduate degree, I took an internship with an elementary school where I assisted in teaching children in grade 2. That was an eye-opening moment in my tutoring experience. It helped me understand that students across all learning levels/stages have different learning techniques. Therefore, when teaching in a class, as a tutor, I have to accommodate the learning techniques of all students. However, this exposure also helped me take on more one-on-one tutoring offers which allowed me to tailor my teaching approach to the student's learning technique and to help the student meet their desired goals.
Also, as a postgraduate student, I also tutor/teach one of my classmates in a course that she finds challenging.
Overall, tutoring has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. It has helped develop my understanding of the subjects I teach and has given me the opportunity to positively impact the lives of my students.
Tutoring Approach:
As a tutor, I always strive to make complex concepts simple and understandable by breaking them down into smaller and relatable parts. My objective is to help students understand and see how these concepts apply to real-life situations. I also encourage my students to ask questions and to work through problems together so that they can better understand the topic.
One of my greatest successes as a tutor was helping a student improve their grade from a C to an A in just one semester. I did this by working with them regularly, identifying their weaknesses, and helping them to develop a study plan that worked for them. Of course, tutoring can also come with its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles I face as a tutor is finding ways to engage students who are disinterested in the material. However, I have found that by tailoring my teaching approach to meet each student's unique needs and interests, I can often overcome this challenge and help them to better understand the subject matter.
