Personal Description:
I am an accomplished researcher and educator with over 15 years of experience in academic writing and research. I have published in leading academic journals and books on topics broadly related to education and learning. I have a PhD from University of Toronto, and a CELTA certificate from Cambridge Assessment English, that specializes in teaching non-English speaking learners.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been working with high school and university students to improve their academic writing and learning since 2004. I have designed my own courses by developing a syllabus that generates critical thinking and learning skills. I also work with high school students in order to help them achieve their goals as mandated by the Ontario curriculum for high schoolers (including OSSLT preparation).
Tutoring Approach:
I believe it is important to teach skills that learners can use on their own. I believe every individual is capable of achieving academic success but may need guidance in the form of skills, and confidence, to help them come up with ideal solutions to their own academic needs. Thus I try to do both: allow learners to gain confidence in their learning and also teach them skills that are specific to their needs. Depending on the learner's needs I often provide additional resources (including practice exercises, extended tutorials, links to online and text-based resources) to ensure intellectual growth and academic improvement.

Mai is also very patient and encouraging, which made her easy to work with. If I needed Mai to explain something to me more than once, she would always do it without losing the enthusiasm in her demeanor. This was always surprising to me, because sometimes these impasses in my understanding made even myself a little frustrated. One thing you can count on, is that unlike some people in the teaching industry (other tutors, professors, teachers, etc), Mai actually cares about whether you take something helpful away from her sessions with you. I'd recommend Mai to anyone having difficulties with subject matter that fall within the scope of her listed expertise. And if you're reading this, thank you for your help, Mai.
That is when I found Mai. Mai got to know what his weakness are and started focusing on those areas. She gave him homework which helped him prepare for his school submissions. Not only did he score well, but now is interested in bettering his score more and is loving his english classes.
His teachers from school also said he is improved a lot.
I highly recommend Mai, she is the best tutor for english.

Mai is a very friendly person and it has been delightful working with her so far. She understands your strengths and weaknesses, and finds the right strategy to improve them. She is a patient person and lets you think about your ideas. She is flexible of the time and I am excited to have more tutoring with her.
I am so happy to find Mai help with my son’ tutoring.
