Personal Description:
Hi there, I'm Madison! I am a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa with a degree in International Studies and Modern Languages in the French Immersion Stream and a Polyglot in progress. I have a passion for languages and am always striving to learn more. I am fluent in French and Spanish while my lastest endeavour is learning German. Multilingualism has opened so many doors in both my personal and professional lives and I love helping others to strive to create those opportunities for themselves.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me practicing my photography, spending time with my friends and family, or more likely … travelling.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring since my first year in high school, back in 2012. I started just by helping out my fellow classmates in my French Immersion classes and it grew from there. I have tutored people of all ages and abilities both in my community and at university ever since and did so up until recently when unfortunately due to COVID-19, I had to convert to online lessons.
As an avid language learner myself, I understand both what it takes to and the difficulties surrounding learning new languages. I have a better understanding of how to approach language tutoring, having gone through it all myself, multiple times over.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that everyone can learn anything they want to, but some learn in different ways than others. I always use my first session with a student as an ice-breaker. This time is important to get to know one another so we are both comfortable and to ensure that we are both happy moving forward. This time is also used for an evaluation of the student's abilities, learning styles and goals in order to understand how to best approach our lessons to follow. We also choose whether half-hour or one hour session are best based on the student's age, learning style and goals.
I've always been an advocate of making learning fun. I think that the more the student enjoys how they are learning, the more they will absorb and therefore enjoy what they are learning. Of course, my teaching is very dependant on each individual learner, but interactive and customized activities as well as small daily at-home tasks play a key role in language learning success from my experience.
