Information About Liam
London tutorPersonal Description:
I'm currently in the third year of a Specialization in Physics at Western University. Throughout my undergrad, I've taken a variety of courses in math, computer science and physics. I graduated high school with the second-highest average in my year, and the top grades in FSF1D, CHV2O, PAF2O, PAF3O, MFM2D, SCH3U (as a grade 10 student), SBI3U, SPH3U, MCR3U, MDM4U (as a grade 11 student), and MHF4U (as a grade 11 student).
I'm comfortable with all 3 high school sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) and the various high-school math courses from grade 9 through grade 12. At the university level, I've taken courses in multivariable calculus (Calc 1 through Calc 4), ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, discrete math, applied logic, probability theory, programming in Python and JavaScript, and many physics courses (I'm comfortable teaching anything from 2nd-year university physics or earlier).
Tutoring Experience:
I've volunteered as a tutor at Western University's Physics Help Center, I taught swimming lessons for 4 years, and in the summer I work as a lifeguard for a daycare and special needs program, so I have a fair bit of experience with tutoring/teaching and working with kids.
I've just recently started one-on-one tutoring outside of Western's Physics Help Center. I look forward to the opportunity to learn about science and math together!
Tutoring Approach:
I like to focus on explaining concepts in a way that allows the student to understand why we follow a certain set of steps to solve a problem. Learning the steps to solve a problem or memorizing concepts is usually enough to do well in a course. However, understanding why we take specific steps when solving a problem, as well as how the concepts are connected, allows the student to handle problems that don't follow a copy-and-paste solution technique. A common issue that I've observed with first and second-year students at university, is that they can solve problems from previous courses, but they lack a deeper understanding of what the concepts mean and how they relate. I was guilty of this in my first and second years, and it strongly affected my courses. Since then, I've developed different approaches to learning new content, and I hope to apply these approaches to tutoring other students.
In summary, I believe developing a deeper understanding of concepts early on saves students a lot of trouble down the road, and this is what I focus on addressing.
