Personal Description:
I am currently an undergraduate student at McMaster University studying life sciences. Chemistry, biology, and math (pre-calc, calculus, algebra) are among my favourite subjects to both learn and teach. I am extremely patient, energetic, and flexible when it comes to teaching, and will be sure to provide each student with an individualized approached to learning. I am comfortable working with students of all ages. I can communicate effectively with young students at the elementary and junior levels. I am also comfortable working with high school age students. As an early undergraduate student, I am familiar with the Ontario curriculum, especially when it comes to preparing students for university courses in chemistry, biology, and calculus.
Tutoring Experience:
I have one year of tutoring experience at the university level and two years at the high school level in physics, chemistry, biology and math. I also worked with young children as a daycare assistant where I was taught how to interpret nonverbal cues to understand when a child is confused, or upset. I believe this is a relevant skill set for online tutoring when an instructor often relies on visual cues to assess a student's comprehension.
Outside of academics, my teaching experience includes two years as a certified ski instructor where I developed the ability to teach my students how to follow directions, visualize, take risks, execute movements and self-assess. These are transferable skills that I often apply in academics.
Tutoring Approach:
Dear Parents,
My goal is to make successful, self confident students. My approach is to offer a student-centred approach to learning where I cater to each individual's unique learning style. Here is an example of a typical tutoring session:
I begin with a diagnostic. What are the student's challenges? I confer with the student and then look at their academic work to confirm the assessment. I address the challenges with the student in a step by step process until they have a clear understanding. First, we may do work together and then I watch them complete their own work so that I can assess their comprehension. When necessary I can supplement course materials with specific subject workbooks and online resources. Near the end of every tutoring session I always ask the student if they understand or if there are any other questions.
Dear Students,
During these challenging times, I want you to feel as through I am your study buddy sitting beside you helping you with your academics. You can show me your work and tell me what you do not understand. I will go over problems, step by step until you understand. I am friendly and approachable. I am available days, nights and weekends and will make time for you before important test dates because I know what it is like to be worried the night before a big test. You can count on me to be there for you when you need me.
