Personal Description:

Hello, my name is Laura and I have over 7 years of experience working with children, adolescents and young adults form ages 5-25 in French, Math and English. I have experience in classrooms, tutoring environments, and study skill workshops. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Ottawa in Second Language Teaching in French and Math. While in Ottawa I also earned my bilingualism certificate and completed a semester abroad in Geneva to improve my French. I have completed my Master of Teaching at the University of Toronto (OISE) and am now a certified teacher. I am offering Tutoring for French, Math, English, or Study Skills for all ages.

I have always wanted to be a teacher and I love working with students of all ages and levels. My goals as a tutor are to create a personalized tutoring plan to meet the needs of each individual client. It is my hope that all of my clients set and reach their desired goals by the end of our sessions. I am willing to help with subject review, conversation skills, essay writing/editing, exam prep and general study skills.

Tutoring Experience:

When I was in high school, I tutored younger students in Math and French over the lunch hour and after school. These were typically individual sessions to review course content and study for tests.

During university I tutored individual university students in Calculus and Linear Algebra. I also tutored ESL (English Second Language) students as they prepared to enroll at the university. I worked for the University of Ottawa for 4 years as a study group leader. In this role, I mentored and tutored first year university students in Calculus (in both English and French). In this role I created content review lessons and taught university study skills. Over the summers, I tutored high school and middle school students in Math and English.

I worked at St. Andrews College as a residence don, math supply teacher and math tutor. I taught Math classes from grades 9-12 and tutored students individually and in groups.

I have also completed student teaching placements in Math and French classes from grades 9-12, in core, extended and immersion French.

I currently tutor clients during my free time and am currently accepting more clients.

Tutoring Approach:

I wouldn’t say that I have a clear approach to tutoring because I believe that every student is different, so I adapt my style to meet their specific needs. For example, I could plan things ahead of time, or help a student with homework and projects that they bring from school. In general, I like to help my students build the skills and put steps in their own words so that they can remember the material after they leave. For languages, tutoring sessions can be more conversation or grammar based. For Math, sessions can be used to go over the theory or spent doing many practice problems. Overall, I am very patient, caring and organized. I will do whatever I can to help my clients succeed!
