Information About Kirti
Waterloo tutorPersonal Description:
I am a Masters student with Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, University of Waterloo. I am associated with the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) chair in Industrial Water Treatment at the University of Waterloo who fund my research and my studies. I did my undergraduate in Chemical Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology, India, where I held the gold medal at the college level and silver medal at the university level. I worked in the water industry following my bachelors, before deciding to pursue a masters focussing on water treatment. I enjoy reading books immensely and if you give me a chance, I'll recount endless cool stories!
Tutoring Experience:
I tutored a 6th-grade student in Hindi and Science in 2013 for about a year. She was having difficulty at school understanding Hindi as Bengali was her native language and I helped her master the basics of the language. I also taught her some advanced concepts in Science to prepare her for future grades.
I am currently tutoring a 10th-grade Canadian student in Math and Science once a week.
Tutoring Approach:
I like explaining the basic concepts behind a particular topic before delving deeper into it. I think it is important to understand the bigger picture of why we're learning something, especially in math. This is useful in giving a perspective when students actually face the situation of applying what they have learnt. Whenever I teach a topic, say, linear equations, I like explaining how it is important, how to visualize the equations in a 2-D plane and also, how they represent natural occurrences around us.
Giving examples with things that surround us comes to me naturally. I think it is an important tool in capturing a student's attention and also, helping them understand a concept more clearly.
I also tend to draw in my own experiences to convey how I've used a particular concept in my own studies because seemingly mundane topics prove to be of paramount significance, especially in higher studies.
