Personal Description:
I am a certified teacher in secondary school science, and I completed my teacher training at the Institute of Education, UCL, London, England. I have a PhD in Translational Research and a BSc degree in Medical Genetics, both from the University of London. I love to travel, and meet new people. I enjoy learning new languages (even if it is just a few words), and trying different foods. I love running, walking and being outdoors.
Tutoring Experience:
For the past few years, I have worked in London, England secondary schools teaching science, specialising in biology and chemistry, whilst building cross-curricular links across the National Curriculum. I taught across all key stages; year 7 through to year 13, with the majority of my timetable scheduled for the GCSE classes (Canadian equivalent of ages 11 through to 18 years old).
I have tutored primary school and secondary school children for the past 10 years. I have experience tutoring A-level and undergraduate students in biology, chemistry and basic physics and maths. I have also taught scientific writing, basic calculations needed by scientists, and a general overview of statistics. I have worked at the Science Museum, London, England for 3 years, and also given presentations linked with Aim Higher, Society of Biology, Society of Chemistry and East London summer schools.
Tutoring Approach:
I vary my style of tutoring depending on the student. I have worked as an examination invigilator for mainstream students, as well as being a scribe and reader for students that have special educational needs. I have been an unofficial translator too (Urdu/ Hindi), as English is my first language. Based on these experiences, I can tutor in a specialized way that takes the slow and steady approach, or I can list things off as bullet points, or images/ graphs, whichever is the most appropriate for my student. I do not believe in "one style fits all", and appreciate there are differences between how people learn, and the speed at which they learn. I honestly believe there are no stupid questions; I am all for learning, whichever direction someone wants to take. Everybody thinks and processes things differently.
Experience of exam boards (for GCSEs):
English Language and Literature: AQA and Edexcel.
Maths: AQA, Edexcel: both foundation and higher tiers.
Combined Science: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and iGCSEs: both foundation and higher tiers… Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics): AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and iGCSEs: both foundation and higher tiers.
I use a digital pad which acts like electronic paper that I use to annotate my students' work in real-time and provide immediate feedback, both verbally, and in writing. My students and I take Zoom screenshots/ PDF/ PNG images of our screens to refer back to at a later date, and also for students to revise from, as they would from a school notebook.
