Guelph tutorPersonal Description:
Hello! My name is Kayan and I am a 3rd-year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto pursuing an Honours Bachelor's degree in Science (HBSc), with a specialist in neuroscience and a minor in applied statistics. I plan on furthering my studies in the future as I also wish to obtain my Master's in Science (MSc) with a focus on interdisciplinary neuroscience research. This past year has been extremely testing for all of us but especially for our education system. Students need all the support they can get!
Tutoring Experience:
-2 years of experience in a local high school outreach program to encourage and help ease student’s transition into secondary school.
-I am a teaching assistant at my university in biology, psychology and math-related courses
-Experience working with elementary-aged children within the scope of general science
-I have a strong background in the following subjects; Biology (anatomy and physiology, molecular biology and genetics, neurobiology, biochemistry); Psychology (cognitive psychology, behavioural psychology, philosophy); Mathematics and Applied Statistics (general calculus, probability and statistics, and data analysis).
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that there is no such thing as a bad student or a poor learner. I also firmly stand by the notion that the educator is the primary person responsible for the success of their students. And for these reasons, all my tutoring sessions rely on building up the foundations for scientific understanding and not rote memorization. My goal is the feed students scientific curiosity and to help blossom them into bright young scientists themselves. Our world today now knows more than ever the importance of scientific literacy and critical thinking in light of the global pandemic, hence why our students need to foster these skills to better prepare for the future.
I promise to deliver curriculum-based learning coupled with relevant scientific topics such as laboratory simulations, discussions about current events in the field, and scientific reading and writing comprehension.
