Personal Description:
Born and raised in Flatrock, Newfoundland, Canada
Attended Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) beginning in 2010.
Obtained a Bachelors of Science with a double major in math and physics in 2015.
Obtained a Bachelors of Education with a specialty in Intermediate and Secondary Education (junior and senior high school) in 2016.
I drove from Flatrock all the way to a small community in Alberta known as Trout Lake in the summer of 2016 where I began my teaching career.
Tutoring Experience:
I began tutoring when I was in Grade 12 (year 2010). It actually morphed into a fairly successful tutoring business while I was talking an entrepreneurship course. I continued this tutoring business right up until I got my Bachelors of Education in 2016. I would tutor students mostly in high school and early level university/college math and physics.
I began teaching in Alberta in 2016, and have taught grades 7 to 12 math and science, including high school biology, physics and chemistry. This is my 5th year as a full time teacher.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to begin with a review of some of the concepts being discussed currently in the student's class. Having another view on a topic may help the student understand it better, or just further reinforce what they already knew.
I then like to tackle any homework problems a student may be having trouble with. I will generally go through the problem with the student, have them point out any important information. See if they can begin the first step. If not, I will help them come up with the first step. Then see if they can take it from there, so on and so forth.
For assessments, I do not like completing the exact question given, or even working through a question step by step, as that ruins the validity of the assessment. Instead, I make up another question that is near identical, but just contains different numbers, or a different set up to a problem, etc… This way, the student understands the process, and can then apply it to the assessment question.
