Personal Description:
I am a going into my second year at University of Toronto for mechanical engineering. I have a passion for math, physics, and computer science. I have indicated these as my tutorable subjects because I am not only capable of explaining the concepts, but I have a real passion for them and I enjoy discussing them at length. As a student, I have often felt that many topics are covered very quickly in class, and many students - myself included - are left with at best more questions, and at worst confusion. I enjoy tutoring because I get to discuss topics which interest me with others, and help to avoid others from being frustrated by a lack of information the way I was when learning a new topic.
Note: I have indicated that I will work with students up to five kilometers away from my place of residence - which I would be happy to do - but until the threat of covid-19 and physical distancing recommendations are lifted, I am only willing to work online over a video chat.
Tutoring Experience:
Throughout high school I did some volunteer tutoring. I volunteered in a grade six classroom's after-school group, tutoring math for 1.5 hour sessions to help students prepare for EQUAO. Later, I tutored a fellow student the year below me in computer science through a peer tutor program that my high school offered. Both of these were positive experiences which only ended when the after school group ended and when the year ended respectively.
Tutoring Approach:
I think that I try to take a very methodical approach to tutoring students, and to explaining concepts in general. I believe that frequently, people are taught concepts with many details glossed over (which frustrates me greatly when learning something new.) I think that many concepts are very confusing when students are only taught *how* to do something, not *why* to do it that way. I always try and approach a topic from the ground up, making sure that every layer of abstraction is clear and understood by both parties before moving onto the next. This approach ensures that once you are able to do something, it is very hard to forget how to do it, or to get confused, because you know why it works that way, and need to do very little memorizing of particular algorithms or 'tricks.'
