Personal Description:
My goal is to help every student I work with get the best and the most out of their study of the law and achieve their own legal career goals. After practicing in Toronto for 10 years with two of Canada’s largest law firms, I kept a promise to myself and moved to London for graduate studies at the London School of Economics. I then stayed in London and practiced with a nationally ranked specialist law firm, where I led a team of lawyers providing commercial employment advice and support to the NHS.
I left the full time practice of law 3 years ago to pursue business and other opportunities, but my interest and love for the law continues and grows stronger. That is due largely to the senior secondary, undergraduate and law school students I have been lucky enough to meet and work with over the past two years.
The opportunity to encourage a student’s enthusiasm and new ideas, to help clear away the obstacles of confusion and frustration that the study of law can present, and to support the mastering of new practical and intellectual skills that the study of law requires is both rewarding and a delight.
Tutoring Experience:
While I am relatively new to the formal sector of online and remote tutoring, since my third year of law school, and throughout my 20 years of practice in Canada and the UK, I have been mentoring, guiding, instructing and teaching, law school students, summer law students, articling students and clerks, newly graduated lawyers, junior lawyers and associates in the academic, practical and human challenges that the study and practice of law constantly presents.
Each challenge is different, as is each student of the law facing that challenge. Guiding a student’s process of assessment, analysis, decision making and application as they grow in knowledge and confidence was a highlight during my years of practice and it is the approach I have brought to tutoring.
I have had the following degrees conferred by the noted Universities:
▪ Master of Laws (LL.M), London School of Economics, London, Great Britain
▪ Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia
▪ Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons) Economics & History, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario
Tutoring Approach:
My overall approach is to help clear away whatever is getting in the way of you achieving success.
For most people this means making the law less intimidating and a more approachable subject of study where you can feel confident in your abilities and your intellect.
I work with each student, identifying their needs and supporting their abilities in order to successfully approach and absorb the new material, issues, ways of thinking, processes and practices which the study of law will present. I will challenge and support you to have confidence in your abilities and strengths and to also properly identify and address areas that need work and improvement. Where there are problems, I work with students to find the right solutions to the right problems.
I use what I have learned and the experience of more than 20 years of practice to help clarify confusion, avoid obstacles and solve problems. Whenever possible I use real life examples and experiences which can help make abstract legal principles make sense.
While I provide guidance, support and direction to you, we will be working together in partnership so that you get what you need, at the speed and with the support, materials and level of attention and intervention that you require to help you enjoy success in the study of law.
When I started to study the law, it was like the start of a friendship with a fascinating new friend, one who constantly presented new ideas, approaches and issues. Usually they were fascinating and exciting friend. Sometimes, however both the issues and this new friend could be frustrating, confusing, even inconsistent and illogical. I had to figure out this new friend and learn how to avoid the frustrations and clear up the confusion. At that point, the friendship became balanced, and the law was no longer demanding, frustrating and overwhelming. The friendship was the best and it still is.
I hope that every student I work with gets the best and the most out of their friendship with the law, however long and deep that friendship may be.
