Personal Description:
Hi! I am currently a Grade 12 IB diploma student at Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill. Aside from my academic undertakings, I have a passion for the arts and health and am a committed participant in extracurricular clubs. As an older sister to a rather mischievous sibling, I am no stranger to responsibility, trustworthiness and organization and I value open communication with my students. I knew I wanted to teach at the beginning of high school because I would unofficially tutor my peers in subjects they had difficulty in from time to time. Occasionally, I would tutor their friends or friend's friends at their request and I loved it because I love building relationships with others.
Tutoring Experience:
I have experience tutoring Math, ESL English, Science and Music at the high school level and I have worked with special needs students in Kindergarten. Tutoring a variety of students has taught me that students learn in different ways and how those methods can be catered to in a one-on-one setting.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in goal-oriented learning. In my experience in music, I find that setting goals for each session and unit is the best way to guarantee a productive lesson because what needs to be accomplished is very clear. Accomplishing these goals is motivating for both the student and I because it's a tangible way to measure learning, and you feel like you're making progress. I am also a believer in verbally reassuring students and praising high quality work because it boosts their confidence in their new abilities and makes them more motivated to continue learning when the material gets challenging.
I believe in routine when it comes to teaching because when a session is predictable, more time can be focused on learning the material rather than on worrying about what will happen next. Sessions will typically begin with any problems the student faced with any homework or questions about the material they came up with since the previous session. This will be followed by a review of the previous session, usually through a few practice questions and the lesson for this week. Naturally, this outline is flexible.
Finally, I believe in setting high expectations for students and challenging them to do their best. I believe in doing this through the review questions for each session, and providing focused and actionable feedback as often as I can.
