Personal Description:
I'm a second generation English speaking Canadian. The first level of teaching was primary, and have taught most grades in the Elementary system. Later in my my career, I switched to Adult Education and English as a Second Language. I am an active language learner of Italian.
Tutoring Experience:
Beginning in mid 1990's, I taught all levels of the adult LINC Program, both for the Calgary Board of Education and for SAIT (technical school) in Calgary. From there I taught at the University of Calgary in the English for Academic Purposes Program in the Faculty of Education until 2007. From 2010 -2020 I was a Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessor with credentials to assess for the LINC Program, career focused programs, and CELBAN, the English Language Assessment tool for Nurses.
Tutoring Approach:
Following 'Best Practices for Teaching Adults', and following the Canadian Language Benchmark Guidelines for Teachers, it's necessary to make the program relevant to the client, and to keep them involved in their learning process. It's important to meet them where they are in their present language learning process. Feedback between tutor and client is essential, so the client feels comfortable to ask questions and help direct the subject matter they wish to explore.
