Information About Jack
Markham tutorPersonal Description:
Hi there! I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy-League and top-10-ranked American university with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Philosophy, and I'd be happy to work with up-and-coming students to guide their studies toward excellence.
I graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, the #1-ranked high school in America, where all classes are conducted with the "Harkness method"—a roundtable of 10-14 students and a teacher so that classes are mostly student-driven and rely entirely on discussion for learning. After four years of practicing the Harkness method, this ensures that I know how to steer a conversation in the right direction, without just reciting material or mindlessly repeating what the other person already said. In one-on-one environments, my skills also translate to a personalized and straightforward approach to help kids truly understand, both on a conceptual and practical level, any material that needs to be learned.
In terms of qualifications, I have studied math up to and including multivariable calculus + calculus-based linear algebra, have had my opinion articles printed in publications such as the New York Times, Boston Herald, and New Politics Magazine, represented the United States of America at the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships, and scored 1590/1600 on the SAT.
Tutoring Experience:
I've taught as a summer tutor at Olympiads School in North York before, with a focus on English, S/SAT prep, and competition Math.
Tutoring Approach:
As a graduate from Exeter, I can bring a unique, student-driven approach to tutoring that delegates responsibility and independence onto the student, while pressing them to think deeply about the material they're learning.
