Personal Description:
Hello! I am a TDSB Student Trustee, School President, and twelfth grade Honor Roll student at Earl Haig Secondary school who will be attending the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Having attended Claude Watson School for the Arts from grades 4 to 8 and the Claude Watson visual arts program in Earl Haig secondary school, I have become extremely skilled at sketching, painting, sculpture, and more. I have also won multiple provincial art awards. Not only am I highly adept in visual arts, I am also extremely skilled in math, consistently scoring top in my class. I’m also talented in english, writing essays which granted me entry into the University of Pennsylvania and winning multiple writing awards. Through my extracurriculars such as being elected onto my school’s student council for three years, and being elected as Student Trustee for the biggest school board in Canada twice, I’ve learned to love helping others. Through tutoring, I hope to do the same.
Tutoring Experience:
I have extensive tutoring experience as a two-year DECA trainer at my school, where I trained new DECA competitors, many of which got to internationals. As well, as a volunteer tutor at my school, I’ve helped a plethora of students in applied, academic, and enriched course streams in math, english, and art by helping them develop not only a strong foundation in the subject, but also sustainable study habits. Furthermore, I’ve edited the university essays of many of my peers’ applications, helping many of them get into their dream schools which include Yale, RISD, NYU, UCLA, and Berkley.
Tutoring Approach:
After reflecting and iterating on my past tutoring experiences, I’ve discovered that a personalized and goal oriented approach to education works well. Before I start teaching a student, I ask them what learning styles they prefer so I may accommodate them. I ask my student many questions, asking them to explain the concept back to me so I am sure they understand. I am very patient, and always encourage students to ask questions and try to build a relationship with them so that they enjoy class. Although different subjects require different lesson plans, I generally start with a refresher of the past lesson. After my refresher, I ask the student questions to ensure their understanding. Afterwards, I engage in interactive and hands-on teaching of new content with review of old content woven in. Lastly, I recap on the content we covered that day and answer any more questions they have.
