Information About Imran
Pickering tutorPersonal Description:
I graduated from Mississippi State University with a Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering and a concentration in materials engineering. During graduate school, my advisor, Dr. Mark Horstemeyer, ensured that we mastered teaching as a prerequisite to graduation. In lieu of that, I have experience in teaching a range of classes from undergraduate to graduate and an array of subjects that include mathematics, physics, metallurgy, mechanics of materials. Furthermore, I have taught high school students science subjects (Physics, mathematics) from grade 6 onwards for more than a year.
Outside of academia, I am an avid nature lover, and am enthusiastic to explore the many wonders and gems this earth has to provide.
Tutoring Experience:
My experience in teaching dates back to undergraduate studies where I led study groups for multiple junior and senior aerospace engineering courses. I coordinated sessions throughout my final two years of undergraduate studies, focusing on homework, projects, and exams. From these sessions, I developed an effective mean for disseminating information to different style of learners. As I moved into my graduate studies under Dr. Mark Horstemeyer, I was encouraged to continue teaching and further develop my leadership skills. In Fall 2016, I co-taught Failure of Engineering Materials undergraduate course with Dr. Mark Horstemeyer. I was responsible for communicating with all the graduate students, conducting and grading quizzes and finals, and handling projects given throughout the semester. In addition, I lectured topics deemed by Dr. Mark as either my specialty or in need of reinforcement. I have continued to remain actively involved in the Failure of Engineering Materials and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) courses. Furthermore, my recent experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate Materials Engineering course – Computational Methods at the Nano length scale – has been quite rewarding. I was challenged to simultaneously teach the course and accompanying labs to two batches. This included conducting and grading quizzes, midterm, and final exams in addition to designing weekly lab assignments. Throughout my tenure, I strive to inspire, through my teaching, at least the same level of devotion that was inspired in me by my professors.
Tutoring Approach:
During my academic years, I have been fortunate to learn from a variety of teachers, where each one of them had a unique method of teaching. By studying these various techniques, I have distilled a method which is effective and focuses on teaching, learning, and clarification of concepts rather than dictation of facts without a care for understanding the material taught.
