Personal Description:
My name is Hélène and I'm an 18-year-old student in my last year of high school in Vancouver, Canada. I’m half British and half Canadian but I grew up in Costa Rica, so I am also fluent in Spanish. I'm also the youngest of five sisters, which has made sure I’m independent minded and able to hold my own!
Academically, I'm a very motivated and determined student with an overall average of 94% at school (91% in Pre-calculus 12 and 90% in Calculus 12). Although I enjoy all of my school subjects, I have a particularly keen interest in mathematics and, as such, I intend to pursue a degree in Applied Mathematics at university. What I enjoy the most about math is its language-like quality, fluency in which gives the ability to solve puzzles and discover solutions. Being able to pass on my love of math to other students who had previously struggled to grasp mathematical concepts has fuelled in me a genuine love of teaching, an enormous reward in itself! Math can be daunting but I believe everyone has an innate ability to understand it.
Additionally, before I returned to Canada in 2017, I was home-schooled in the British IGCSE Curriculum, which was a very vigorous and challenging course. Being home-schooled for several years taught me to be both self-motivated and self-disciplined, two attributes that are very important in order to achieve academic success. It was during my time as a homeschooled pupil that I was tutored in math myself and this has given me a lot of insight into what makes a good tutor as my tutor was exceptional.
Tutoring Experience:
I've been a volunteer tutor at my school for the past few years and I've come to realise that I have gift for teaching after witnessing the students' grades improve dramatically. I've also tutored several classmates both this year and last year in math, with great success.
Tutoring Approach:
The approach I use to tutoring is an interactive one with the students that I'm teaching. As somebody who has greatly benefitted from online tutoring, I know first-hand that a relationship between the student and the tutor is critically important. From school, I've seen that the best teachers are the ones who are engaged with and care about their students' success. As such, I like to get to know my students and tailor my tutoring style to match each individual student's needs.
