Personal Description:
I am currently a third year medical student at University of London. I graduated from University of British Columbia with a Bachelors of Science degree and a Masters in Public Health from University of Edinburgh in the UK. My degrees have allowed me to build a specialised knowledge base in the health/medical sciences and a strong foundation in the basic sciences. Teaching has always been a part of my life as I enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others. I have more than 10 years of teaching/tutoring experience in various subject matters including piano, swimming, English, and Sciences. I consider teaching a fundamental expression of myself which I enjoy practicing each day. I am enthusiastic and sociable person who would love to make your experience of learning as fun as possible.
Tutoring Experience:
As much as I enjoy learning and striving for excellence, I find reward in sharing my knowledge and skills with others. I started teaching as early as my childhood when I taught my brother how to ride a bike or taught my neighbour's children how to play the piano. My official tutoring experiences started when I was in secondary school. First, I began private tutoring for family friends and grew my network of clients through word of mouth of satisfied tutees and parents. Then, I worked in a private academy for international Korean high school students teaching subjects including the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), provincial exam preparations, and assignment assistance in various other subjects. My clients report increased interest in learning, as well as improvements in their final grades. After graduating from UBC, I went to gain experience abroad as an English teacher at an elementary school in Korea. There, I created lesson plans and delivered lessons to classrooms of 10-20 students. Currently I am a tutor for clinical skills for 1st year students at my medical school.
Tutoring Approach:
Before I devise a specific plan, I like to understand my student strengths, weaknesses, motivation, and needs as much as possible. In this way, I can tailor my approach to best suit the student so that they are excited to learn and get the most out of my lesson. I will have a rough lesson plan ready according to the subject matter that is being covered that day, however I am flexible and will adapt to my student's needs depending on specific circumstances. I also like to focus on teaching critical thinking skills and study skills so that the student can gain as much autonomy to learn future subjects with minimal help. Over many years of being in the education system, I have learned and adopted many tips and tricks for scoring well in exams. Hence, I will trying equip the student with various tools to help them succeed by teaching memory aids, exam preparation and test-taking strategies, etc.
