Personal Description:
My lifelong fascination with biology has led me to become a biology tutor. I can teach microbiology, ecology, zoology, evolution, environmental science, and oceanography with student-led learning as my approach to meeting each individual's specific learning needs. Learning how to find an answer or reason with elements that help them arrive at an answer is more effective than providing every answer to them.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a bachelor's degree in general biology and a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My career path has taken me from newspaper journalism to graphic design, to seafloor microbiology to refining biofuels from algae. I've also worked as a teaching assistant for a gradua**Contact Detail Removed**vel oceanography course and microbiology instructor at the community college level.
Tutoring Approach:
After assessing the student's current level of understanding, I use examples, metaphors, and concepts to help them move forward. I sometimes use memory tools but discourage memorization. In my belief, flexibility is important in presenting material and answering questions.
