Personal Description:

My name is Emma and I am a math tutor. I became a tutor because I enjoy helping people and love being able to pass on knowledge to students who need the extra help. I love seeing my students grow and gain confidence in a subject they had thought lost. During the pandemic I think that it is even more important that students feel fully supported in the subjects and areas that concern them most, and I am happy to have the opportunity to help them through this uncertain time.

Tutoring Experience:

Most recently I have worked at a Math learning centre for all ages and have gained invaluble skills working with elementary, middle school, and high school children. I helped with both homework and taught concepts from written materials, as well as introducing educational games and fun activities.

Whilst attending university I tutored students in both math and chemistry at a high school level. I also assisted professors with the teaching of undergraduate chemistry students as a postgraduate student.

Tutoring Approach:

I start by identifying problem areas, sometimes I am approached to help specifically with certain areas, other times a student requires help overall to improve their grade. Either way an assessment will determine what the students strengths and weaknesses are, how they approach a question and what level they are working at. Using these results, I then create an individualized plan to help the student to obtain their desired goals. During a session I will teach a specific topic making sure that the student understands at each step. I will then give questions for them to try to answer and prompt them through if necessary. Once I am happy that they have grasped the topic we will move on to the next. Each session I will retest a topic covered previously to make sure knowledge is retained.
