Information About Emily
North Vancouver tutorPersonal Description:
I am a PhD graduate in English and have been awarded a Fellowship of the UK's Higher Education Academy for my substantive experience teaching, assessing, and supporting the learning of undergraduate and graduate students and adult learners within 1:1 tutorial and small-group teaching environments. I specialise in teaching English Literature and Humanities subjects, University Admissions, academic essay writing, and study skills in a supportive, welcoming, and enthusiastic tutoring environment.
Educationally, I am a PhD graduate in English Literature from the University of Birmingham (UK) working on late-Victorian authors. I received my Master of Studies in English (1830-1914) from the University of Oxford and was trained in working with rare archives. I received a First-Class BA in English from the University of Warwick. My PhD encourages interdisciplinary nineteenth-century research, so I work in related academic disciplines, including History, Religion and Gender Studies. At Birmingham, I tutor academic writing, have received multiple funding grants, worked as a Research Assistant for Birmingham’s Nineteenth-Century Centre and co-founded a university-wide reading group.
I am also a Freelance Editor and was an Account Manager for an award-winning content marketing agency, managing multiple projects and budgets for the agency’s largest financial institution clients (RBS Group and Unum). I was also an Events and Content Assistant for Informa and successfully coordinated large commercial speakers’ events.
Tutoring Experience:
As a Fellow of the UK's Higher Education Academy, I have substantive experience teaching, assessing, and supporting the learning of undergraduate and graduate students and adult learners within 1:1 tutorial, small-group teaching environments, and Higher Education tutoring. At the University of Birmingham, I have been a seminar tutor for a class of twenty second-year undergraduate English Literature students on the ‘Decadents and Moderns’ module, responsible for planning and leading their semester of in-person lessons. I also wrote and co-delivered an in-person lecture on Edith Wharton's ghost stories to the 170-person cohort and regularly deliver conference papers and lectures to students. As a Teaching Associate for the Academic Writing Advisory Service at the University of Birmingham, I delivered 1:1 tutorials for undergraduate students in Humanities subjects across the College of Arts and Law to improve academic essay writing techniques, study techniques and effective interpretation of marking criteria and feedback. I have been trained as a Teaching Assistant for The Birmingham Project to support undergraduate students creating a digital research project, supervising interdisciplinary group of ten students to undertake their project activities as a team.
I also work as a Graduate Applications Mentor for international students applying to prestigious UK universities, through which I plan and deliver 1:1 mentoring tutorials to develop applications and linguistic confidence. Mindful of cultural difference, I foster inclusive learning environments by avoiding feedback or language which alienates or confuses. I also have recently undertaken a North Vancouver Indigenous Awareness Training course and am passionate about opening learning opportunities to all. I received a Horizon Award from the Higher Education Futures Institute at Birmingham for completing several teacher training modules, including how to give an engaging lecture, and appreciating cultural differences in the classroom, all of which strengthened my tutoring skills.
In 2014, I was an English and Maths Tutor at Explore Learning and tutored children aged 5 to 14 of all abilities English and Maths. I was responsible for enhancing children’s academic and social progress whilst handling behavioural issues and was trained in school safeguarding procedures. Most recently, I have taken further safeguarding and 'Prevent' training as part of my role as an Examinations Invigilator at the UK's top performing sixth form college.
Tutoring Approach:
As a tutor, I share my academic experiences and passions with students to create a shared, supportive learning environment. I support students in taking an active role in their learning by building and maintaining rapport through friendly exchanges and ensure they always feel comfortable asking questions. I ensure my tutoring provides a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds.
