Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Dhvani and I'm a 4th-year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo majoring in Physics and Astronomy. I've done well in my academic studies as I graduated high school with an International Baccalaureate Diploma and have a 3.99 cumulative GPA at university. I've worked in numerous research positions like conducting experiments in deep underground mines to find dark matter and trying to find habitable planets outside our solar system. I enjoy igniting a passion for science and other STEM fields in the people around me because I want others to see how exciting math and science can be. I believe this lies in making math and science seem less intimidating and daunting to students.
Tutoring Experience:
I have plenty of experience teaching kids math and science. I've worked in a tutoring position at Kumon and Reidmount Saturday School to teach youth math and science for 2 years. In these positions, I worked with a group of 5 students at once to go over homework packets that would be provided by the tutoring companies. However, I've also worked in different outreach positions to create educational programs for youth about science and astronomy. I really enjoyed these positions as I had the creative freedom to develop lesson plans in which I would teach complex astrophysical topics. From these positions, I heard from many students and their parents that I had inspired them to pursue a career in STEM. I also have experience working with at-risk youth as I was the chair of a conference named SOAR: Suddenly Opportunities are Reachable, in which we organized two days' worth of activities for over 200 kids to help at-risk youth develop their leadership skills and encourage them to seek out better opportunities.
Tutoring Approach:
I will first ask the student or parent to provide a list of topics they would like me to cover within each session. This allows me to prepare some practice questions and documentation for the tutoring session itself. After, I would gauge the student's current ability for each topic if it is something they have previously covered. I would want to help give them the tools to understand how to approach that specific problem in math or science. These problems are like a puzzle, you just have to find the right pieces and then understand how to put them together. It's important to teach this problem-solving mindset rather than specific solutions to each problem to enable the student to apply the mindset to every problem they encounter.
