Personal Description:
Hello! I'm an experienced private tutor with a passion for computer science and mathematics. Growing up, though I was always strong academically, I moved around a lot, so I can relate to students who feel a bit left behind. I am fluent in both French and English, and I have a bachelor's in computing from Queen's University. I'm currently in a gap year, but I will be pursuing a master's in artificial intelligence soon. Artificial intelligence is the perfect blend of mathematics and computer science, as a statement of my expertise in both subjects. In my free time, I like to go on walks, play soccer, and read non-fiction.
Tutoring Experience:
I have extensive experience as a bilingual private tutor for grades 9–12 (3 years). During my summers as a student, I would help students learn anything they missed from the previous school year. I also have experience designing crash courses to help students pass their exams. I am used to having to prepare my own content for lessons, as I have not always taught standardised curricula.
At the university level, I was both a teaching assistant and head teaching assistant (2 years) in computer science, where I coordinated the activities of a team of teaching assistants. That is to say, I have an organisational understanding of education as well. Prior to COVID-19, most of my tutoring activities were conducted in-person. Now, the majority is done online. I have good experience in both domains.
Tutoring Approach:
I love my subjects and have a deep desire to communicate the material perfectly, in the way that students can best understand it. When preparing content, I don't design things as they are in my head or even to best fit the average student. My thoughts always start with my students and their learning style. I've taught students who are more quiet and best minimally interacted with. I've of course dealt with students who are constantly distracted and disinterested. I try to make my lessons upbeat and centred on their interests!
In general, I crave to be the person who is there to get that moment out of students—that moment when a concept just clicks and all of a sudden the world seems so much simpler. As a student myself, I experienced situations where I was put off a subject by a teacher. I want to be the person who remedies that situation for students, giving them a reason to love math and computer science as much as I do.
