Personal Description:
I was a high-school Math teacher for 15 years, teaching in England and overseas, but I now tutor full-time. I specialize in grades 9 to 12, and enjoy working one-on-one with students, supporting them with weekly homework, personal projects, course-work assignments, and exam preparation. I have many years experience with the International Baccalaureate, and also the British and American high-school curricula.
I love to play games and solve puzzles, and incorporate both into my teaching. Games allow us to practise new skills in a fun way, and using our new learning to solve interesting and challenging problems is very motivating.
Maths can be difficult, but that does not mean it cannot also be fun. I believe in enjoying life to the full, and that includes the time we will spend together.
Tutoring Experience:
I taught both the IB and mainstream Math programs for 15 years, starting in England and then internationally. I also ran an after-school Math coaching club every week
I specialized in grades 9 to 12, but have also taught grades 6-8 successfully for many years.
Since moving to Canada I devote myself full-time to tutoring, because my teaching qualification from the UK does not permit me to work as a teacher in Canada.
I currently have 5 students who I drive to in the local area, but I would like to find some clients online as well to cut down on my hours spent in the car.
7 years @ Barton Court Grammar School - Canterbury, England - grades 8 to 12
4 years @ American International School of Mozambique - Maputo, Mozambique - IB Diploma grades 10 to 12
3 years @ British School of Quito - Quito, Ecuador - grades 9 to 12
Prior to training as a Math Teacher, I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for 2 years in Britain & overseas, teaching conversation skills.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to explain new concepts by linking them to what a student already knows, and I always try to connect the learning to real-life examples.
It is important to practise often as we learn new material, so we will do a lot of question & answer sessions, as well as longer written problems as we progress. I can also set you challenges to do in your own time, and then we can discuss your work during our next session. Working independently is important to build up your confidence in Maths.
Learning needs to be engaging to be successful, so we will be quite active during sessions. We might flip coins to learn about probability, analyze the structure of plants and animals to apply our geometry skills, or compare smartphones to practise using our statistical tools. Learning Math will be easy if the motivation is strong!
Our first step is to identify where help is most needed, based on a thorough evaluation of your unique situation. Rather than sitting a paper test, we will have a long conversation and work together to solve a few problems to figure out a plan. This is far more informative than correcting a test paper.
It is very important to me that your child enjoys their studies, to encourage a positive attitude towards learning which is so key to developing the confidence needed to succeed in Math.
