Personal Description:
Passionate and highly experienced Science, Biology, Maths and English teacher in Goderich, Ontario.
Growing up on the coast of Lake Huron got me into the outdoors at an early age. That lead me into a career as a fisheries biologist. Based upon that solid foundation, I gradually turned towards the social aspects of the environment. That lead me to study science communication and ultimately to teaching.
In addition to my love of the outdoors, and practical experience as a biologist, I love bringing my diverse skills and interests together to help engage students and ensure their progress. For example, I am an avid writer and editor; I excel at mixing the latest technology with educational activities; and students have told me that I am a very good math teacher.
In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, cycling, photography, film/video production, going to concerts, reading, journalism, blogging, online learning and creative writing.
I am very generous with my time; I have volunteered for a wide variety of organizations over the years and I give students extra help outside of lessons, whenever needed.
I won the Award of Merit at the 2000 Ryerson Continuing Education Film Awards; the 2002-2003 dian marino Award for Masters of Environmental Studies students who creatively use multi-media tools of inquiry and modes of communication to critically explore environmental issues; and the "Heart Award" was awarded to my Year Five class, for increasing safety & well-being of students.
Tutoring Experience:
I am registered with the OCT. My current teachables are Intermediate / Senior science and biology. I have six years experience teaching science and biology in UK schools. I also have five years experience teaching primary school in the UK.
I have an Honours Degree in Biological Science, in addition to Bachelor of Education and Master of Environmental Studies degrees. I trained to become a teacher in York University’s Mathematics Science Technology (MST) Program. I was a “straight A” student, consistently achieved excellent practicum reports and my supervisor told me I was one of the top candidates in the program. I am committed to further education. I completed the Overseas Trained Teacher Program and obtained Qualified Teacher Status (UK) in July, 2010; I have attended a plethora of continued professional development (CPD) sessions; obtained software certifications and I am currently reigniting my love of technology with courses in Java and instructional design.
I have a strong theoretical background in biology, science communication and multidisciplinary approaches to research and education - with an emphasis on lateral thinking and independent thought. My multidisciplinary teaching approach utilizes computers, art, photography, videography, and writing. I often incorporate group work, self-assessment, presentations, poster-making, educational games, competitions, ICT and practical activities into my lessons.
