Information About Brytan
Ontario tutorPersonal Description:
I am a student at Nipissing University studying for my Concurrent Education degree in Math and Physics. I am an outgoing guy that always loves getting the students I am tutoring involved, and I always like to find the best way the student learns. I am currently in third year and work at my family's restaurant. I want to improve my skills much further in the way of teaching to better prepare for myself when I eventually leave university and pursue a career in teaching.
Tutoring Experience:
I have a great deal of tutoring and teaching experience I would like to share. I first learned how to teach at the age of eleven when I was a leader in my Navy League Cadet Corps in North Bay Ontario. I was teaching the corps drill and tying knots, as well as some more theoretical Navy League lessons such as semaphore and seamanship.
A couple years after that I joined Army Cadets in North Bay and rose through the ranks pretty quickly. Eventually, I was teaching the flag party, as well as the drill team how to do flag drill and rifle drill, respectively.
My next teaching experience happened when I was in grade ten. My Functions Math teacher was brand new and occasionally requested my help to help him understand how the peers of my class learned. From then on, I became a sort of freelance tutor in my school (minus the pay).
In grade 11 I ended up getting a co-op in a grade 9/10 Mathematics classroom and while the teacher taught the grade 10's, I would teach the grade 9's. I would also do some marking of the tests and would provide additional help outside of class time to solidify their understanding.
In grade 12 I became a Student Ambassador that worked in the Student Support Center at my school. I would help students that were struggling with their work. However, the best experience I had was when I taught two Syrian refugees English and Mathematics. These two guys ended up reaching their grade level if they were born in Canada by the end of the year.
Although this is not necessarily a teaching experience, in my second year I took Developmental Psychology for Educators, which focuses on the cognitive development of students from birth to grade 12.
The final bit of teaching experience I have is when I worked at Mathnasium in North Bay for about three months as a Mathematics tutor. During my time there I learned how to tutor multiple students at once on a one-to-one basis and I always tried my best to help the students learn in the best way they can.
Tutoring Approach:
One thing I have learned from all of my experience tutoring and teaching is that everyone learns in a different way. Some students learn in an analytical way, while others may learn in a creative way. Some students are hands on, while others are auditory. I believe this is a highly important thing to realize because I have figured out that it takes longer for a student to learn by sound when they typically like to learn by hands on. It is this reason why I like to try to find out how the student learns, so I can teach the concept with a great affect and with great efficiency. My all-time favourite thing to see is the lightbulb go off in a student's eye when they understand something I am teaching them. I also always like to bring an energetic mood to my teaching and tutoring because I have also learned that if you have a more serious mood, the student could be intimidated, and if you have more of a depressed mood, the students mood will reflect that with the work you may assign them. One thing I did learn from Mathnasium was how to tutor multiple students at once. Basically, I would go to one student, answer any questions they have, help them understand it in a different way, then move on to the next student, occasionally returning to make sure the student understands what I taught them. Overall, I am an energetic tutor that loves to do anything he can to help a student understand a problem he or she may face.
