Personal Description:
** At this time, all of my sessions will be held online in accordance with government guidelines with the current health crisis **
I graduated Brock University with an honours BSc degree in biochemistry. I graduated at the top of my class with first-class honours and completed the Co-op option to give me industry experience. I am currently completing my doctorate degree in biochemistry to further pursue a fluffing career in biochemistry. One of my main goals in life is to inspire others. I hope to inspire students through tutoring to pursue a fulfilling career and to never give up on themselves.
Tutoring Experience:
I have given lectures in various undergraduate courses in biochemistry and have tutored many of these students in a one-on-one setting. I have also tutored many highschool students in biology, chemistry, maths, biochemistry and physics. Each of my students has increased their course GPAs throughout the time I have tutored them.
I have experience as a teaching assistant where I have lead undergraduate research labs in advanced biochemistry courses. Throughout the duration of this course, I have been responsible for grading various lab reports of ~30 upper-year undergraduate students as well as assisting them in preparation for all exams and final lab reports. I also have experience in lecturing University level courses and tutoring in small group settings.
During my university degree I had the opportunity to complete a peer mentorship program in which I mentored international students from India, the UK and the USA. These students came from diverse degrees in physics, biology and biochemistry. These students have allowed me to grow as a mentor and expand my teaching style to allow me to assist students with varying learning styles.
I also have experience in coaching students on how to write tests efficiently without experiencing and ‘brain freezing’ due to the ‘fight or flight’ response we have during stress. I have practiced and taught various strategies to ensure your body goes through a ‘fight’ response versus a ‘flight’ response. This includes tactics to relax and refresh your memory, various association techniques and techniques to use when revising.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching philosophy is quite simple, I believe that everyone learns in different ways and that we never stop learning. I believe that in order to become a successful teacher/ tutor, you need to become flexible with your teaching approaches and grow with your students. I learn from students just as much as they learn from me. I also hope to inspire students in academia and foster their confidence to pursue a field they love and will succeed in.
