Personal Description:
Growing up, I needed a tutor on a weekly basis for several years in Elementary School. I struggled with English in every sense of the word. My struggles continued into high school, until I started feature writing for a professional basketball team in our city. Once I made reading and writing fun for me, my marks skyrocketed from 70's to 90's. That same year I was hired as a weekend reporter at our community newspaper. The year after I started working as an NBA writer for Sheridan Hoops, an ESPN affiliated website.
As Vice President of the Island Storm, I oversee our communications director who's primary responsibility is to handle all written statements, creative content, and public engagements. Having that experience has provided me with valuable teaching skills. Dating back about five years ago, I was a peer helper of a Grade 11 English class, and often worked one-on-one with other students. I was also a member of the lunch buddies program, a group that eats lunch with special needs students each day.
Tutoring Experience:
I've been tutoring a Chinese-born Islander for almost a year in the subject of English. It's been a rewarding and exciting experience so far. I'm well trained in English, business, marketing, social studies and history.
Tutoring Approach:
I'm very hands on. I don't write out a game plan but I always prepare before each lesson. I try to open each lesson with a conversation and take it from there.
