Personal Description:
A friendly hard-working student of the Occupational Therapy at Ualberta (graduated with a BA in Psychology from SFU with honours); I am interested in people from all walks of life, I love helping children and adults to succeed in any endeavor, and I can adapt to any situation.
Tutoring Experience:
I have two years' teaching experience as a piano teacher, where I instruct children and adults with a range of abilities to play the piano and understand the fundamental knowledge and theory behind music. I do this through explanation and demonstration of musical techniques, and I have experience with teaching of and support for students with disabilities.
I have three years' experience as a certified Water Safety Instructor/Lifesaving Instructor, where I have taught swimming skills including water safety, physical endurance, and technique in a pool environment to children of all ages as well as teens, adults, and disabled patrons.
I have three months' experience as a tutor, where I provided private instruction to individuals to improve academic performance. This also involved providing feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students as well as reviewing class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
I also have considerable volunteer experience with several different organizations:
- Neuromotion physiotherapy
- Tri-Cities Brain Injury Support Group
- Hyde Creek Recreation Centre
- Sunridge Gardens Retirement Home
- Outer Island Bed and Breakfast
Tutoring Approach:
Having homeschooled through the majority of middle and secondary grades, I have gained an understanding of how students must often self-motivate in order to succeed. I also understand how a school's social environment can have a tremendous influence on a student's academic performance as well as their mental/emotional health. From this perspective, my approach to tutoring is non-judgemental, yet structured. I am always looking for ways to promote a student to reflect on their own understanding, and from this, incorporate new concepts into their working knowledge base. I also attempt to gain insight into each student's particular learning style so I can personalize my approach.
