Personal Description:
Hi! I'm a fourth-year Bachelor of Music student at the University of Lethbridge, studying euphonium performance and music education. To me, there is nothing more exciting than a student having a "light-buib" moment where everything they've learned suddenly clicks.
Tutoring Experience:
Most of my tutoring experience comes from helping fellow colleagues with assignments in our common courses, including music theory, history and aural skills. My main specializations are below
- Music theory (basic/advanced levels, harmony, counterpoint and analysis of Classical to 21st century music)
- Music history (Everything from Medieval/Renaissance eras to 20th/21st century music, plus all the essay writing skills involved)
- Aural skills/Ear training (Solfege, learning pitches/intervals, sight-singing and dictation)
- Instruction in low brass instruments (euphonium, tuba, trombone).
I have also taken ED2500, which is an introductory course required for all prospective teachers. Consequently, I have knowledge in lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment/evaluations.
Tutoring Approach:
As part of my teaching philosophy, I believe in engaging critical and creative thinking through music-making, both in individual and group ensemble settings. For every student, I create an individualized action plan based on their strengths, weaknesses and goals. We then can set a timeframe for achievement and implement exercises that best fit the student's needs and learning styles. For example, one student might thrive off online resources such as musictheory.net or MuseScore for their training, whereas another might do better using the traditional route of pen and paper. Flexibility to different teaching styles is key to everyone's success.
Empathy and patience are also core values in my classroom. Everyone learns at their own rate and a good educator is someone who encourages their student to grow, both academically and emotionally. Positive reinforcement and building a strong relationship between the parent, tutor and student is the best path to achieve this.
I strive to have a low-pressure, inclusive classroom, where everyone is welcome, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, or creed.
